Well, I call the entire M line "the ultimate sleeper." This is because, as you know, there are only slight exterior differences between base and "M"; only people like us will definately know the difference. Sure, it's not as exaggerated as you say, but there is a major performance difference between the 528i and M5, e36 325/328i and M3. You're right, the e30 M3 is a bad example because of it's boy racer flair; on the other hand, in my experience,people thought my M3 was a 325i with a body kit(my aunt actually thought it was crashed). So, most people don't realize that M's are more full-fledged sports cars than sporty cars. One journalist(I think CAR mag) covering the new M3 said that if it is only a tenth of a second slower than the new Corvette Z06 and four tenths faster than a Porsche it should be called a sports car, even if I could fit a baby seat.
Glad to have the bug back...
Don't have an M3 yet, but just bought an 83 euro 635csi.
