Unless you have silky smooth credit and a high income, forget it. No bank will give you enough funds to cover a mint 1988 M3 ($12k?) via a personal loan unless you can secure it with something other than the car; i.e. $12k cash.

Some "secondary lenders" will finance older cars purchased through dealers, for a price.....I've seen rates as high as 36% on a '91 model. Save enough cash to buy it outright or buy a newer car. IMHO.
