Why oversize stem, valves? (archive)

Cool. That's how I've done things with my M20's, but when it came to the S14 - my local dealer gave details of the oversize valve stem valves. But nothing on guides.

Come to think of it - you've got a point, the guides on a S14 head would be no different to that on any other engine (in principle).

Why are the oversize stem valves listed/used? If new guides are fitted and then reamed - surely one could ream to an exact size? 16 valves (of the 1st oversize or even normal) are a shit load of money - I would expect having the guides replaced to be cheaper.

Any thoughts?
