Eric already had an HAI ,aka a "Hot Air Intake", aka a "cone filter stuck on the plenum".

In this case, the headlight thing probably turns the HAI into a WAI (warm air intake). This is very desirable. ;)

I agree that the Evo airbox/K&N is probably the most effective, durable, and elegant solution. Plus, I like my highbeams.

Below is an interesting article, with some data, that illustates how the maximum gain from "ram air boost" would be around 2 hp at ~140mph. I would really only think that removing the headlight would be something i would do on a track only car, or maybe just take it out for events. Plus it is not the most aesthetically pleasing mod.

I'm going to get this air box soon.

now have you reall looked at your headlights? other than the .1cm ring around the headlamps or the small amount of slatts in betweeen the headlamp and the radiator (where the M3 badge goes) all of the slats are closed off. I would think that there is minimal air comming in from "directly" behind the headlights. Now what if you did this

wouldn't this open up that aera behind the headlamp a lot? not necessarily creating a "ram air" but letting the engine breathe much easier?

hey on the e30 m3 if the airbox inlet and if you took the headlight off what would that do for getting air into the airbox, absolutely nothing, the best way on our cars is to get a k&N and an evo air box, i used to be a mechanic and have experimented with many ways, i have found the best way is to do that and duct air from the fog light area with 5 inch wide tubing, cool air and great iimprovement
