The "dirt" accumulated in the filter helps filter out smaller particles. I've never seen any flow rate analysis to support paper filters being worse than K&N. As far as European car, I don't read it. I do know my engine has been running a K&N filter for its last 100k miles, is currently at 156k, and have a strong/clean engine according to my mechanic, a former e30 M3 crew cheif. I haven't had an oil analysis in a very long time, so maybe some things have changed.
