If you don't pass sound at Laguna Seca try some large custom DTM tips (i'm talking at least a 5" curl upwards, more if you can).

I've seen it happen. Two H-Stock E36s were racing at Laguna. One had SuperSPrint straight round tips the other had the SuperSprint "DTM" tips. The guy with DTM tips passed while the straight tips guy saw the black flag. This is what led me to believe that what I was told was true...

That sounds far fetched. I do believe you about the two cars but one could've had modifications that affected the exhaust sound that had nothing to do with the tips. Besides Supersprint exhausts are pretty quiet, those two guys must have had other mods that affected the sound.

If anything those short tips throw the sound up in the air. If you need to avoid the sound reading sensors, you have to point the exhaust out the side opposite of the sensors. Meaning at Laguna Seca you point them out the left side of the car. Still, with that new 91db limit, a lot of modified class BMWs won't be running there at track events. I'm not sure if they lift that for races.

I like the other explanation better about not damaging the whole system. :-)
