You are probably right. I have heard of cases of timing chain failure but this doesnt necessarily mean snapping. I think it is more of a case of prevention better than cure. I`m in the UK and in Europe at least it is recommended to have the chain and sprockets replaced at around 100kmiles. Maybe this is just a money making excerice for garages though because in the U.S this doesnt appear to be a problem and I cant see why Europe would be prone to timing chain problems and not the U.S.

QUESTION: Has ANY E30M3 owner suffered a BROKEN timing chain????? Other than it stretching slightly I have never heard of a timing chain breaking...

providing timing chain is changed before that.
I have heard of people driving M3`s with 100+ k miles on them which felt better than other cars with 50kmiles because they had been looked after better. It is still a strong BMW engine after all.

Hey guys. I have been looking for a E30 M3 for about 1.5 yrs now. I am looking for one with 60-90k miles for around $12,000. I have seen them around but are a very rare find. Should I ignore those M3s with 110k-150k miles on the original motor. I have noticed that around 115k-130k the motors start to go. I dont want to buy a car for 12,000 and then turn around and put another 6500 into a new motor. What do you guys think about this?? Do you think I should just give up on a M3 and buy a E30 325is??
