I recently looked at an 88 with 130k on it. Had it inspected etc and all the 'normal' things needed doing - gaskets, hoses, exhaust, etc. The sum was around $2500 to get it fixed. Not bad.

I did some asking around about maintenance too and that scared me off. It's a small engine that runs hot. The concencus seems to be allow around $1500 per year. Parts are expensive and my experience with BMW service has not been good.

Good cars yes, fun to drive YES. But - I drive a 911 (= more fun) and the running costs are a lot less than the M3.

Try the new WRX = new and a bargain bang for buck.
