I heard that this setup was used to help scavenge the exhaust. Since there is a low pressure area behind the car, pretty much behind the trunk/bumper area. The high pressure from the exhaust is directed at the low pressure area behind/up at the back of the car to help pull the exhaust out of the system.

Does this sound viable?
