I am pretty sure they're using the connecting rod bolts (to clamp the rod around the crankshaft, sealing the bearings) that were used on the E36 cars. However these E46s are spinning a bit over 8000rpm (as opposed to 7000rpm of the E36s), I think a stronger bolt is necessary here. This should prevent the motors from grenading in the future.
