They charge about 600.00 to do the job at Stricktly BMW in Seattle. It will take a good tech about 2 hrs to swap the cams but the valve adjustment is where the money in parts and time go.
You will need a valve cover gasket set a rear cover gasket, front cam cover gasket, and the shims to adjust the valves. There is a special tool used to take the load off the valve springs, so that when you remove the bearing caps you do not snap the cam in half.
There are indexing mark's on the cam and gear so you don't need any special tool for proper alignment of the cam. You will also need the special tool to remove the shims from under the cam lobes when doing your valve adjustment. If you have never worked on one before I would recomend you have your tech do it. If you are going to attempt it on your own make sure you lossen each bearing cap nut a half turn at a time. starting in the center and working your way out to the front and back of the head ,switching back and forth so not to snap the cam in half. IT can be done but the parts are not cheap as you already know.
Good luck,
