Having just completed this task 5 minutes ago its really very simple. I have an 88 M3 so it goes like this:
first loosen the e-brake boot and slide it off of the handle, then pull out the rear ash tray. Then undo the nut located under the ashtray (I think its 10 or 11 mm not sure though) The console should now slide towards the back (being careful not to break off the tabs connecting it to the shifter console) After this simply slide it over the brake handle and you're on the next part.

The next piece (around the shifter etc is more involved and is described in the maint. manual in more detail. (Make sure you lossen all fasteners (under the shift boot and front ashtray forward) prior to using any traction to pull the conslole out as you will break off the tabs that allow for everything to fit back together. There are also fastners in the footwell on either side.

Good luck!
88 M3

I need to know how...
