What is small vent by temp knob for? (archive)

There is a small vent about 1.5 cm in diameter and round in shape to the upper left of the temperature knob of center dash console. Mine does not have anything behind it and light shines out of it when I have the console lights on in the dark. Is there something that is suppose to be attached behind it? What is its purpose?
