If the car is mint, less than 100k miles, great interior, exterior, paint, etc, then I'd pay no more than $8k. A used engine with less than 100k miles will cost $3-5k, just for the long block. Wiring, accessories, etc are all extra.
If the car is in OK condition, raced, over 150k miles, needs paint, whatever, don't pay more than $5k. Things like wheel bearings, driveshaft, subframe bushings, diff rebuild, fuel pumps, paint, rust/bodywork, electrical diagnostics, and others will jack up your repair bills rapidly. If you can do all the work yourself, you may come out ahead. If a shop does the work, you're looking at a hefty sum just to install an engine. It's not hard, just time consuming.
