Adjusting Valve questions. (archive)

My car has 30k miles. I dont think the car ever had the valves adjusted. Is it true that they should be tended to every 10k-15k miles? What sort of damage occurs from neglecting them? If any is this damage reversable? Is there anyone you guys could recommend me to in Tri-State area who does a good job? What should I expect to pay for this service?
