If you get someone to rebuild the engine to stock specs, provided nothing is damaged (crank, rods, cams, etc), you're looking at $3000-6000 parts and labor. The head reconditioning is really expensive. Parts include new pistons, rings, wrist pins, bearings, seals, updated valve springs, oil pump (if needed), water pump, hoses, belts, etc. If you need new valve guides and/or valves, the price runs toward the $5-6k range.

For a regular 2.5L rebuild reusing the stock injectors, AFM, throttles, header, et al, the parts and labor is around $6-9k. Again, price is largely dependent upon head work. For the 2.5L kit, you get crank, pistons, rings, wrist pins, bearings, bigger head gasket, and chip for use with stock injectors and AFM. If you want more power, get bigger injectors, 535i AFM (same as Evo-3 M3), bore your throttles, bigger header (Group A Rallye header), Schrick cam(s), etc. This will make your engine more peaky, and the parts are VERY expensive for only 30-40 more HP over a regular 2.5L rebuild. The 2.5L is a big step over the 2.3 in terms of power and torque. Cams, throttles, header, etc, are very expensive but do not give you a lot more gain. It's the law of diminishing returns.

I'm still debating on whether or not I want to build a 2.5L. Turner sells the crank, pistons, rings, gasket, chip, wrist pins, and other related parts for $2150. Head work starts at $800. Check out their site--www.turnermotorsport.com
