I am assuming that the Miata was new. In an engine there are very few parts that have metal to metal contact that nees "breaking in". You need to seat your rings, get them shaped to the cylinder walls. Excludeing gears in the tranny and drive chains, if you have metal to metal contact in the rest of your engine, it's a dead puppy. There is no seating of bearings, including your thrust bearing, wrist pins, cam carriers, etc.(think about what will happen to a main bearing if there is no oil). M. Bentz said for a new '71 280 SE advised not to drive at a constant speed durring the first 1200km, and to not exceed 4500 rpm for the first 250km. Do change the oil to clean out the stuff from the rings and cylinder walls.
