The 02/early 318 filter will work, If you look at all aftermarket books they say the M3 is the same. But if you buy a factory filter(diff # ends with 039 I think) and compare it to the 02/318 I think that the M3 filter has no by-pass spring/ or a higher pressure spring in it.(I forget which) Checked this once long time ago.
