E3 M3 starting problem (archive)

Hi, guys i own a 1988 M3 ,while running on the street, the engine shuts down and wouldn't start, i had to towed it home.I checked the fuel pump relay, the fuel pump itself but they were ok.Ten i pulled out the connector from the distributor abd try to crank the engine and found out there was no spark.So i'm desperate, can you guys please tell me what could be wrong and what could be done to fix it.
