the 1600/2002, 2002tii, 320i, 318i (-85) filters share the same thread but the m3's filter has a different pressure rating.

using the lessor (but more available) filter will probably work on a street car (driven as such) but more than a few m3's have had trouble resulting in rapid oil loss (pressure & volume) at track events (including driving schools).

this is not an item to be cheap about. what's the savings? less than $2 if the dealer has a higher markup on m-parts. making certain that you get the right part # is usually more of an effort.
