several years ago a driver and I believe his passenger were killed during "fun runs" at an autocross in Southern California. A full out race prepared lotus elan's throttle may have stuck open and the car went off course and ran into something - tree or light standard, demolishing itself. Of course there really is nothing but a drivetrain and four wheels for crash protection in an elan.
