Jim C has the straight poop on this. You can do it, but it probably won't help. Popping on overrun can be caused by the ECU not cutting fuel enough when you let off the gas, unburned fuel gets into the hot exhaust and pops. Check for clogged injectors, burned valves and seats, and carbon build-up on the piston crown.

My 535 did it when I bought it with 208k miles. When I rebuilt the engine, I replaced the timing chain, tensioner, guide rail, rings, bearings, and did a valve job (most likely the fix, ex valves/seats were getting bad). No more popping, and nothing else was changed.
