You're right, the E36 probably is a way faster car in usable terms (and so it should be - completely different philosphy, more ci, taller gearing, 6 cyl, blah blah blah), but, after the precedent set by the E30, many journalists of the time were surprised at the successor to the E30 'cos it was so different, a completely different experience to the E30. Not the 'kart on steroids' the E30 feels like.

Many, if not all of those who didn't like the first incarnation of the E36, loved the evo version because it addressed many of the complaints leveled at the 3.0 such as soft suspension body roll etc etc (over and obove the power issues). The E36 evo was/is MUCH closer to the E30 concept.

But then hey, there are still loads who love first E36 'cos it's that little bit softer, that little bit more comfortable, and that bit easier to live with than the stiffer evo model.

I think the E36 is a great car, I'm just trying to understand some of the bad feeling I have noticed coming up on the msg board.

Still never gonna part with the E30 tho'.
