How much is "stupidly expensive"? Sounds like you may have gotten gouged for those before. The new copper locknuts are only $0.30 each or so (PN: 11 62 1 304 755). They're crimp type locknuts so once they've been taken on and off once they become round and don't stay tight too well.

Has anybody had this recurring problem of exhaust manifold studs and or nuts loosing up?

Things do "fall off" and break, eg: exhaust nuts, A/C mount bracket breaks, airbox rubber mounts fail, intake manifold shims/seals wear out... If you are retourquing them monthly, you probably are better at "normal" e30 m3 maintainence then most. Mine get loose to the point of exaust leaking every two or three months. My BMW guys at Redline say "...that's to be expected". I have not found a soulution to this issue, execpt putting on new, stupidly expensive nuts, helps.
