Once the detonation begins (and this was only at WOT), you can hear a rattling sound coming from the combustion chambers. This is the fuel igniting under pressure like a diesel (that's why the effect is sometimes called 'dieseling') before the spark plug fires. The ECU's knock sensor tries to compensate by retarding the timing, and this results in a noticable loss of HP. Not a good situation all around.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the JC chip, it just pushed things a little too far for my particular engine. Maybe my mileage is too high >147K. I suppose if I had higher octane gas I'd be ok, but 91 is all that's available where I live, without springing for 'race gas' at five bucks a gallon.
