Tyres question: Sport Evolution (archive)

It is time to replace the tyres, Currently the car is wearing 235/45 fronts and 255/40 rears on 17x8.5 wheels. The fronts do rub on full lock. Also I think the gearing might be a bit tall with the big rears. I would like to replace them with a single size and am thinking along the lines of 235/40 or 245/35 to get closer to the original gearing with the 225/45 16s that the car would have had originally. The car is not lowered. Any thoughts out there? Thanks in advance.
