I don't know if this is the problem or not but sometimes I would get a small rock caught between the brake rotor and shield. It sounds horrible(metal on metal) but then the rock falls out and the sound is gone. I've had it last up to 5 miles but it doesn't happen very often.

No one can figure it out partitially because I cannot reproduce the sound when I take the car in...

Ok so sometimes when I am driving around in parking lots, or making slow stop/go manuvers, there is this strange metal on metal grinding popping sound coming from the back of the car... it usually happens in the transition from backward to forward, or when I am turning slowly while the car is engine braking (like you would in a parking lot and you take your foot of the gas to make the corner at the end of the row). I thought it was the diff or the gearbox but the both check out... the car has new axle shafts and drive shaft so it's not those either... HELP ME PLEASE

PS: my baby is an '89 M3 with 89,000 miles...
