Clearcoat bumpers on non-clearcoat car? (archive)

I just had the bumpers on my 1990 Alpinweiss M3 repainted and they put a clearcoat on them. I can tell and it looks a little funny.

They told me that they put clearcoat on everything now "because of the materials." I said, "Even if the whole car has a non-clearcoat finish?" They said, "Yep."

I don't want a clearcoat on my bumpers. I want it the way it was from the factory. Apparently, this is not possible.

So, are the shoveling it on because they accidentally put a clearcoat and don't want to re-do it, or is it the truth?
