you were probably looking at the oil pump drive chain not the cam chain(it is a single row chain whereas the cam chain is a double row)if so they usually wear alot and are pretty loose you can tighten it up by adding shims under oil pump (this is how tension is set at factory)but if your going to go to that effort just replace the chain

when i changed my oil today i removed the lower oil pan to see what was going on inside and noticed my timing chain had a good deal of slack. the previous owner had it replaced not too long ago so its not worn. thanks for help guys!
