Not sure what he means by a 'gutted' thermostat, but if the thermostat now allows a significant amount of flow increase, water temp could be very deceiving. It is kind of anti-intuitive, but more flow can make for less heat pick-up in the head, combine that with the inherent greater efficiency of a radiator to shed heat (much more surface area compared to inside the engine) - you could have a overheating engine and cool water temps.Trust the BMW engineers. Look elsewhere for a solution.
