loud rattle up front!! anyone know.... (archive)

at about 2000-2500 RPM in every gear, I get a loud metal on metal rattle. it sounds like it is coming from down low in the engine compartment and maybe a little tword the right (passenger) side. I noticed it most in traffic and I can make it rattle by jolting forward (or back) and then slam in the clutch. I thought maybe that meant it was the clutch fork but it happens during traffic (not just right after the clutch has been engaged).

are there any ideas???
I'm going hunting tomorrow but I was hoping for a place to start.
