I was out with my friends a few nights ago driving back to my apartment. We were on the main drag of the city, which is a 4 lane road (2 on each side). One of my friends was in his 2001 M5 and the other was in his 1999 Boxter (not S). I was in my 1988 M3. We were driving along and the road opened into 3 lanes on our side of the road. There was nobody in front of us and we each took a lane at the light. Ahead was a right turn that we all had to make; I was in the right lane, the Boxster was in the middle lane and the M5 was in the left lane. My other two friends had to merge into my lane to get over for the turn; it was obvious that a race was going to happen. It was about 1 a.m. and nobody was out and in danger, plus it was just a straight shot to the light. Engines started revving and we all took off when the light turned. The M5 had no problem getting ahead of me and the Boxster, and I was hanging even with the Boxster. He couldn't pull ahead of me, and had to back off and merge. When we got to the apt., I couldn't help smiling and asking him why his $50k porsche couldn't outrun a $12k 13 year old car. It was a good day for BMW.
