The way BMWs check to see if a bulb is "OK" is to read the voltage. The original bulbs are sliver coated on the bases. Over time people put "regular" brass based bulbs in. These have more resistance, due to minor corosion on the brass, than the silver BMW bulbs (who but a German Engeneer would specify silver coated light bulbs?). The BMW bulbs do not cost much more then the Pep Boys bulbs, and work in our cars.
