Yes, this slotted end has a reference mark on our stock one. The mark should be pointing toward the firewall. But it is possible to rotate it 180 deg thus installing it wrong. Just wondering if this is true for the e36 tensioner as well???

The e36 tensioner has no marks on it. It is a solid unit with the slotted end that fits on the tensioner rail.

Doug, I know you installed this mod on your car. I have one simple question. Do you have to point the tensioner piston (the part that contacts the chain) in a certain direction? The original tensioners have a mark on them as the piston can be rotated. Which leaves room for installing it 180deg wrong. I don't know if the e36 3.2L has such reference marks. And if so which way it should point.

Sorry, I can't give you prices on the timing chain pieces as I haven't replaced those (but I don't think they are expensive - labor is though!). Anyway use the tensioner from the E36 3.2L euro M3. It's a piece of cake to install and works great. The cost is around $75.00 if I remember correctly. Search the archives from about two months ago for the specific P/Ns and prices. HTH...
