In Reply to: Battery Dead. Replace w/ dealer battery or other? posted by JJS on June 24, 2001 at 10:50:14:

My battery is completely dead. I have tried recharging it, but it will no longer hold a charge. I need to replace it. Should I buy one from the dealer or Pep Boys, Chief, or Checker Auto Parts? Any assistance would be appreciated with specific suggestions. Thanks in advance. Joe

My brother bought one from Advance Auto Parts in Richmond, VA. They are about $120, but they crank like crazy, and you can mount them in any orientation. They are dry inside. You can drill a huge hole through a cell, and it will still work. They're pretty light compared to the OE battery. You'll have to devise a way to hold it down, because they don't make one to fit BMW's battery tray clamp.

OE batteries aren't as good as aftermarket for the money. I bought an Interstate MT-91 for my M3, about $105, fits the smaller hole in the tray. I can't see the need for the huge OE battery, unless you want an all-original Concours winning car.
