My check engine light does not come on when I turn the key to the on position. Is it safe to assume the bulb is burnt out? Is it a fairly easy procedure to replace it?

Dude if you have an E30 M3 then I don't know whatchutalkinaboutwillys. If you have a regular E30 then yes there is a check engine light.

Now if you're taling about the Check Light that always comes on when the car starts then that's a different story. It usually wants you to press the brake pedal and it'll go off. Other things that trigger it are low coolant level, low washer fluid level, a burnt out headlight and whatever else there is on the check panel on the headliner.
I would seriously doubt I'd miss mine if it didn't work most of the time it annoys me more than help.
