HELP NEEDED: in-line fuel pump noise? (archive)

I noticed a whiny, humming sort of noise coming from under my car. I could hear it outside and also in the cabin when sitting at idle.

I traced it to the in-line-fuel-pump/filter area on the driver's side. I used an automotive stethoscope (the kind you touch stuff with) and I could hear the noise in the filter housing and the pump. I'm thinking I could hear it in the filter because the pump was not producing an even flow.

So, the dealer wants $200 bucks for the pump. Are there any cheaper cross-application options or would a used one be a good idea? Do these pumps go out very often? If not, the used option might be good if I can find one.

Thanks,
Jon
