You know if I had your stereo in my hands I could fix it, but I'm not sorry. There is always a tab in your deck that gets depressed when you put a tape in, and causes it to accept the tape and bring it in to the deck. I think the tab is stuck or was stuck, you'd need to have it hooked up to play around with it. You might have caused a major mechanical problem by taking the tape out (happens).
I suggest you hook it up, and play with the drive shuttle/ejection system. And look for a tab/ arm that controls the shuttle system, it's probably jammed!

Wish I could fix it for you, I recently fixed my VCR, but had no replacement retainer rings. It worked excellently upside-down. Well long story short, my kid brother turned it rightside up! My cats still playing with springs at 4am!
