the m3 filter has a higher burst pressure (probably among other things).
personally, i buy mahle filters in packs of six or so from my preferred vendor regardless of vehicle - motorcycle filters can get even more confusing than auto's. i have tried the k&n oil filters on my daily driver (alas, not an m) and they work fine (can't claim that they work better but maybe they help me sleep better?).
plug: steve d'gerolamo sells the proper m3 part for <$5.00. buying several spreads the shipping cost to keep the average price below retail.
