Living in Europe... I find that a steady 160-180 is a relatively unobtrusive cruising speed....

I have just returned from a 2500mi tour of the 'upper Midwest' (Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, the Dakotas, etc.) and found 80mph (130kph) to be a generally 'safe' speed (which is to say, safe from tickets), although the roads/traffic would have permitted much higher speeds. Some less populated areas (e.g., Dakotas) made 85-90mph reasonable, but others (e.g., IL) had sufficient enforcement to push me down to about 75mph.

P.S. - at those speeds my 93 E34 M5 didn't even break a sweat, of course. Top speed on a prolonged 'fast' run in South Dakota was 120mph (190kph).
