I believe that the altitude sensor is fine IF it is functioning properly. The problem is if it is not, in which case you might run lean because the sensor is telling the DME that you are at altitude where the air is thinner and therefore requires less fuel for the same volume of air.
Disconnecting the sensor at sea level should not do anything if the sensor works. Disconnecting it at altitude would cause you to run rich.
The way I see it, getting rid of this gizmo that could malfunction and cause an extra lean mixture is a VERY GOOD IDEA...particularly if you are at or near sea level.
I had thought about a JC chip as it seems to be THE chip. In talking to people it also seems that the So.Cal. gas is just not good enough and pinging is the result. According to Hoa that's what he has seen. Give him a call. I've got his number if you need it.
Okay guys, I know a few of you have had pinging with the JC/TMS chip, even with 92 OCT gas. I swapped the chip out and went back to stock. The pinging was gone and the car ran cleaner (failed first smog test w/JC chip and passed the second w/stock chip). I'm just wondering if EVERYONE is experiencing this pinging or is it just those in SoCal. I'm going to swap it out for a Dinan chip to see if it still pings. This pinging side-effect isn't worth the 2-3 extra HP it has over the Dinan.
Hey Kevin, yeah I've known Hoa for years. Just recently, this subject came up and we were talking about it. I thought our Oxygenated gas might have something to do with it as most of the complaints seem to come from people in California, however, Adam is from Texas. Anyway, I'm not too fond about disconnecting something that should be connected as a "fix", but I would like to keep the chip in.
