And there's just no way you can really get that for your street car with the S14 motor ... anything over 250HP and the car is barely streetable and definitely not suitable for daily driving. Not to mention it costs a fortune and you are still lacking the torque.
A very reputable shop is going to do the conversion for me for about $3000 including all the misc parts I'll need and the labor. I'm buying a motor from a 95 M3 with 42k miles with the tranny, ecu, etc. for $5700. That means the swap is costing me about $9,000 ... and I can sell my S14 for at least 3-4k I guess which means I'll only be out of pocket about 5-6 grand. Not bad if you ask me.
A basic 2.5L conversion on the S14 will run you 5 grand alone for the parts and labor. Then another 5 grand for headwork, throttle bodies, etc. etc. and you'll be around 250-260 HP.
Why spend $10k to do that when I can do this swap I'm going to do and only be out of pocket 5-6 grand? I'll have a factory reliable 240HP with the stock E36 motor plus LOTS more torque.
Then for about $3000 more I can do chip, cams, intake, injectors, etc and be close to 300 HP in my E30 M3 and still have spent less than $10k.
I LOVE the looks of the E30 M3, and my cars handles awesomely with the suspension setup I have (bilsteins with H&Rs, ST swap bars, sparco stress bars, etc.) but I just need more power. And I'm not crazy about the buzzy high-revving characteristics of the S14, nor the lack of torque. Don't tell the purists on me. =)
