You say you are 18? I was that once and drove a '59 Fiat ragtop that was never imported, talk about impractial. Do you feel mature for your age? I did at the time too. Do you have experiance driving a car that can get you over your head in a hurry? There is a world of difference between a Volvo and an M3.
First you say
"Note that I'm 18 and therefore terribly biased towards the M3. I don't want a car for practicle reasons -- I want a car that I can have a boatload of fun in..."
Then you say
"he doesn't want me to get the M3 and therefore is refusing to sign on the loan or pay any part of the insurance. He doesn't feel the M3 is a "prudent" decision..."

I hate to break it to you, he is right. You are defintely NOT making a prudent decision. You are making an impulsive and emotional one.
You do not have the right to:
1) Live off him at home
2) Have him be responsable for your loan (co-signing)
3) Put him at finanicial risk.
Want the M3, great, I love mine, make no mistake about it. But I do not expect anyone else but me to supply me with it. Tell your dad that you will cover the car payments AND the insurance and the maintaince. then give him a hug, and thank him for being a good father, and STOP WHINNING.
