I agree with the previous poster.. If you
are looking for huge performance gains from
bolt on mods then a mustang is a better choice..
The first "mod" you need to do is join the
E30M3 SIG at http://www.bimmers.com/m3/sig/
You'll have 600 new "best friends" that can give
you technical advice when you have a problem with
the car.
In order to truly answer your questions

ups: owning a rare car that retains it's value incredibly
driving the car always brings a smile!
taking the car to it's first home (the track)

downs: parts costs
difficult to find a competent E30M3 mechanic other thatn yourself..

And finally, the best bolt on mod, price per hp
is a Jim C chip... The next one is a local
Driver's Ed event at your local track.
