1989 M3... What's it worth? (archive)

I'm looking at a 1989 M3 that has about 120,000 miles. I'd appreciate any advice you folks could provide on this car.

Here is what I know:

It's been owned by the current owner for about 1.5 years. In the last year he has replaced the follwoing: brake discs/pads, rear bilsteins, distributor cap/rotor, lower control arms, tie rods, windshield, sway bar mounting rods, lower engine cover, wiper motor, and more. Its just had an Inspection II.

The interior is pretty clean. Looks a lot better than I'd expect for an M3 of this age and mileage. One problem with the car(at least I think it may be a problem) is that he also had it repainted. It appears to be a pretty good paint job, but its always been my experience that repainting a car kills the resale value. People will always suspect that the car has been wrecked, although this one does not appear to have been. I probably won't keep this car forever, so resale value is a concern.

Anyway, he's asking $13k for the car and I am not sure if it is a good deal or not. I plan on taking the car to a mechanic to check the compression and stuff, and I will also try to have an expert check if it has been wrecked. That paint job has me really paranoid. Assuming that the engine and body check out OK, is $13k a good price for this car?

As an alternative I am thinking of looking for a decent E28 M5. Whichever car I get will be my daily driver (20 miles round trip) and a driving school/auto-x car. I don't plan on thrashing it too hard, but I want a car that can handle some 'spirited' driving.

Sorry to be so long winded, but thanks in advance for any advice you can provide.

BTW, when do these engines usually need to be rebuilt? Timing chains replaced? Other major service?
