Hi Eric- Yes, I do believe you need to have the car running, as vacuum is need to help the brake booster. I just did this same "upgrade" (cross-drilled Zimmermans, S/S lines, 25mm M/C, painted calipers, PBR Delux pads, etc). You need TO MAKE SURE you bench bleed the M/C before you install it. I had an air bubble that was difficult to bleed out. The problem was I needed to bleed off each individual caliper under the car, pump the pedal, hold, then pump again- holding it in. This will prevent an air bubble from getting into your ABS system-

I HIGHLY recommend the 25mm M/C as the brakes stop on a dime now & the pedal probably depresses about an inch or so. (Not spongy AT ALL:)
