If the car is in great shape chassis-wise and interior-wise, and the owner didn't thrash it, it is certainly a better buy than most other cars you will find like it. I've had my 1988 since 1991, and have done driving schools and autocross through various years of its life. The engines are SUPERB provided they are well maintained (regular valve adjustments, oil, etc.). I've never heard of a timing chain failing on one, but I suppose it could happen. When I've asked about this on my 117,000 mile car, my mechanic says "not a problem". Things to watch for: intake manifold gaskets go bad on these cars on a semi-regular basis until you get a newer type, so I'd ask if this was replaced ever. The fact that they changed the lower control arms is good -- they are quite expensive, as is everything on these cars. Definitely do a leak-down test on the engine. Also check throw-out bearing, which is a common failing part (makes lots of noise until you push clutch in). May as well do the clutch too if you have to replace it.

Make sure you are ready for a quirky but wonderful car for daily driving and track that can cost some $ to fix if you aren't mechanically-inclined.

I'm looking at a 1989 M3 that has about 120,000 miles.... In the last year he has replaced the follwoing: brake discs/pads, rear bilsteins, distributor cap/rotor, lower control arms, tie rods, windshield, sway bar mounting rods, lower engine cover, wiper motor, and more. Its just had an Inspection II..... he also had it repainted.

Seems a little steep for a car with relatively *light* recent work. Has nothing else been done to the engine? If not, it's overdue for a timing chain and who knows what else.... At least have a leakdown test done, but I think it's more like a $9-$10K car..
