1) is it true that an E36 M3 tensioner is preferable to the E30?

Yes

2) A 32mm deepwell socket is needed, correct?

Yes

3) I like to perform all of my own repairs. Where can I purchase a manual (shop/Bentley/Haynes) to help me along?

Turner Motor Sports (good folks) See link below

4) There's a whole lot of debate about whether or not to replace the chain as well. What's the verdict?

Generally, dependant on the care the car has recieved in the 150,000 - 175,000 mile range. There have been some cars that ate theirs by 50,000 miles. A good (honest) mecanic can tell (you will need one of these from time to time, I do and I do most of miown work, including my race engine's rebuilds).

5) Where can I purchase a spark plug removal tool for this car?!

Snap-on, BMW

5) I live in Crystal City, VA. Any DC area residents out there kind enough to show a newbie around his car?

Coming down to Florida soon?
