Options for a worn out Exhaust center section?? (archive)

I replaced the complete center section of my exhaust system about a year ago with a new center section that included Catalytic Convertors as well as an X design. I stashed my old one up in the rafters of the garage because I thought that there may be someway of re-using it. I'd like to construct a simple Jig, so as not to loose the angel of the bends or screw up the length then cut off the rusted Cats. and weld in new resonators or high performance freeflow Cats. (if there is such a thing). Does anyone have experience with this? Of course there wouldn't be any reason to do this if I wouldn't see a HP increase over the stock set-up. I don't want to weld in straight pipes in the voided area because it would be too loud for city driving - right? Also, it would loose some of the backpressure if I did that even though the X would still be there - right? Any thoughts, experience or suggestions is greatly welcomed...
