Well, to put it simply, it's like being an automotive mechanic, except a LOT cleaner. It's also easier on your back because you don't spend hours bent over an engine bay. Oh and when you're working on $30-100 million dollar aircraft, you tend to put a lot of thought an effort into trying not to screw anything up. Mistakes are very costly and can also put lives at stake!

I once heard a rumor that BMW and Mercedes would give fat bonuses to A&P mechanics to come work for them. A&Ps are the very highly trained in precision maintenance and extreme attention to detail, which makes us desireable to high-end auto makers. I almost went to work for the local BMW dealer back home but decided I didn't want to turn wrenches for the rest of my life and joined the Air Force as an electronics technician, which led me to systems administration and engineering.
